The Bonobo

The Bonobo is a contemporary hotel and residential development in Byron Bay, Australia, where Brazilian modernism meets the relaxed character of coastal living. Designed by Richards & Spence with interiors by Studio Manifold, the project transforms a brutalist concrete structure into a warm and expressive environment through rich materials, colour and sculptural forms. Wire-brushed timber, custom joinery conceived as furniture, soft textiles and carefully selected furnishings bring warmth and individuality to the interiors. Departing from Byron Bay’s familiar pale coastal palette, the design embraces deeper tones and playful details inspired by the local surf culture, creating a distinctive balance between architectural strength and everyday comfort.
