Sunyata Hotel Datong Jivashan

Sunyata Datong Jivashan is a luxury heritage hotel located within the ancient walled city of Datong in Shanxi Province. Developed as part of the regeneration of the Southeast Yi Historical and Cultural Block, the project integrates contemporary hospitality spaces into the historic urban fabric through courtyards, passageways and restored Ming and Qing dynasty houses. Designed over five years, the complex combines preserved heritage structures with contemporary architectural volumes. The interiors draw inspiration from Northern Wei Dynasty culture, the Yungang Grottoes and the traditional courtyard architecture of Shanxi. Stone, rammed earth, terracotta and carefully controlled natural light create a restrained material language where history is interpreted rather than reproduced. The result is a quiet, atmospheric hotel in which contemporary architecture and cultural memory coexist.
